There are 3 major classes of asthma inhalers in use today

  1. The first most common inhaler is the Corticosterios inhaler which is the best for serious asthma.
  2. The second class of inhaler is Intal and Tilade which are considered to be very safe.
  3. The third class is Leukotriene modifiers causes muscles around the airways to constrict.

The key to controlling your asthma is to work with your physician to find out which medicines are right for you. Once you have found the right one, you should stick with it. The common cause for troublesome asthma is not taking the medicines your doctor prescribes.

What do I do if I have an attack?

Anyone having an attack should use his/her inhaler quickly. This medicine should be repeated if relief is not achieved in 30 minutes or less. Asthma attacks can be controlled in an emergency setting through the administration of additional medications. With good medical care and co-operation between you and your physician such severe attacks of should be quite rare. Some doctors will provide patients with a small device called a Peak Flow Meter which allows them to monitor airway function at home. This allows the patient to determine if their asthma is getting worse before it becomes very severe.
